By understanding what incapacitates us on an unconscious level, we can only then begin work on toxic stressors that derail our everyday life.
Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) describes different types of abuse, neglect and other adverse childhood experiences that occurred to a person under the age of 18. Studies show that toxic stress caused by ACEs can affect a person's emotional and physical health and can even lead to autoimmune disease such as arthritis as well as breast cancer and heart disease.
Over 17,000 families surveyed from 1995 to 1997 by Kaiser Permanente in Southern California revealed that two-thirds of study participants reported at least one ACE and one in five reported at least three or more ACEs. ACEs are prevalent in communities all over the world. Studies also show that toxic stress from ACEs can be passed from generation to generation.
At Art Greatly, we believe that healing is not a destination but a passage "on the move". We approach this healing passage with a keen observation of what enters and what leaves the mind as well as our sphere of consciousness and physical surroundings. By watching what we "take in" and "put out," we are putting into place measures that stop us from taking on new toxic stress.
An adult person who grew up with childhood trauma may find it especially difficult to talk about their personal and emotional struggles. But our experience tells us that those who "talk it out" and "talk it through" with someone who does not judge and offers a listening ear, helps. This is why we are happy to offer our services online. Learn more about how we work here.
We believe with the right information, families can make better decisions about their emotional and mental health. That is why we create free content that is accessible to people around the world. But we need your help to continue doing what we do. Every little sum helps.
